K Fellfarers

After even more rain during November, December started with fresh snow giving a great first weekend. Here is a panorama from Crinkle Crags on the left, through Bowfell just right of centre, and Esk Pike, to Great End on the extreme right.

Mid-week Walk and meal - The Heights and Hugill from Ings
Roger had come up with the good idea of a shortish walk from Ings finishing in the Water Mill for a late lunch. The route headed off the A591 towards Hugill Hall Farm via a field of Highland cattle. Taking in the Wainwright 'Outlier' of The Heights - see below - the group headed down to Browfoot farm in Kentmere. Deciding that we were moving to slowly (lots of very slippery stiles) Roger took the decision to give the longer walk up Kentmere and back a miss, and the group headed back to Ings via Grassgarth. A celebratory lunch in the Water Mill rounded of the short day nicely. Thanks Roger.
The path from the lane to Williamson's Monument on The Heights crosses a field and negotiates a wall via a squeeze stile. Unfortunately, some helpful farmer decided to add some wire netting to the stile creating quite an obstacle. Some went over the top, whilst Colin here went underneath in a backwards position.
	Fred, being the President of Kendal Caving Club and no stranger to squeezes, took it full on frontwards.

	John and Anne Peat met up with us towards the end of the walk, and joined us for a lazy lunch in the Water Mill pub. According to Roger - "The pub was formally Ings Saw Mill, built about 1880 and was one of some 18/20 mills within a couple of miles of Staveley".

The Sunrise Walk seemed a good idea at the time, but no sun. The breakfast in the Union Jack cafe made up for that though. Here from left to right at the 'mushroom' on Scout Scar are Mike, Cath, Mick, Val, and Fred.

The Christmas Darts and Dominoes Social at the Rifleman's was a good affair, with the added bonus of Cheryl and Jason making an appearance having travelled up from Derbyshire.


The Annual ATTT (All Terrain Toboggan Trial) at High House on New Years Eve
This once again provided much fun to all competitors and spectators. Here are the competitors before the trial. From left to right - Miss Mark, Kevin - the only gay in the town, Colin Wolfman, Dean Christmas, Graham, and Richard looking remarkably normal.
First trial: And they're off! The downhill based in the field alongside High House.

Well it would have been without all the mud.
	Second trial: The speed trial from High House down the track, through the water overflowing the pipe bridge, and down to the gate.
Back to the warmth of High House to recuperate.
	Third trial: The road race down the main road from Seathwthaite, trying to miss passing vehicles and walkers.
Also trying to avoid running into each other.
	Kevin getting up speed by catching the wind in his umbrellas.
Fourth, and last trial: The water trial. This year using the stretch near the stepping stones at Rosthwaite.
	Which for some reason seemed to attract a lot of spectators.
And they're off.
	With some off their amphibious vehicles.
But all make it eventually, with their vehicles in various states of disrepair.
Down to the Scafell Hotel for the judges results. Mark won overall but needed some extra points for style to achieve it - it was the high heels that did it! Well done Mark.
